At the age of four, Babu made his first debut as a child actor in Telugu film Needa (1979).
Babu began his career with his second film Sankharavam (1987),following others like Bazaar Rowdy (1988), Mugguru Kodukulu (1988) and Gudachari 117 (1989). He was featured in a dual role in the film Koduku Diddina Kapuram (1989). Babu then made his presence in movies like Bala Chandrudu (1990), and Anna Thammudu (1990) continuing his college studies.
In 1999, he made his debut as a lead actor with his first film Raja Kumarudu, alongside Priety Zinta. The film was successful at the box office.
The film played in a 50-day run in 80 centers and a 100-day run in 44 centers. Raja Kumarudu collected a revenue of around ₹10.51 Crores from Andhra Pradesh itself.Later was dubbed in Hindi as Prince No. 1 and in Tamil as Kaadhal Vennila.
He won Nandi Award for the Best Male Debut. He appeared in two films in the next year – Yuvaraju and Vamsi. He also was featured in Krishna Vamsi’s Murari in the following year.
He regarded Murari as an important film in his career and the role he Portrayed in it is one of his dearest roles till date. Babu won his second Nandi Special Jury Award for his outstanding performance in this movie.
Babu played in two film releases in 2003, the first one was Gunasekhar’s Okkadu alongside Bhumika Chawla, which went on to become a blockbuster hit and the highest grossing of that year. He achieved his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu for this particular movie.
The other movie was Teja’s Nijam opposite Rakshita. It was a failure at the box office. But he won his first Nandi Best Actor Award for his incredible performance in the film.
In the start of 2004 ,films like Athadu, Arjun and Naani were successful at the box office and critically acclaimed.
His another movie Pokiri in 2006 also was a huge commercial hit at the box office. For this movie, he won Filmfare awards for the best actor male category.
In the next year, his movie Athidi co-starring Amrita Rao was a failure. But he received accolades from audience and critics for his soulful performance.
The movie was considered as one of the “25 Greatest Telugu Films Of The Decade” by Film Companion.
In early 2010,another movie was released called Dookudu which was a blockbuster. It earned the largest opening week for any Telugu movie in that year.
In the following years, his next releases were Businessman and Sukumar’s 1: Nenokkadine were a commercial success. It got him Filmfare awards and other regional awards. He had cemented his place in people’s hearts not only by his charming looks but also through his incredible acting.
But his movie Aagadu flopped at the box office. After 2015, his next movies like Srimanthudu,Spyder,Bharat Ane Nenu, Maharshi andSarileru Neekevvaru set new box office records each year. They all made their mark in the 100 and 200 crores club.
Babu’s next upcoming projects are in various stages of production. He is filming for Sarkaru Vaari Paata, marking his debut in collaboration with director Parasuram in January 2021.
Babu is also partnering with Trivikram Srinivas from April 2022. He has also signed to star in S. S. Rajamouli’s untitled film which is expected to start its production in 2023 based on the Jungle theme.
