In 1998, Dhoni was selected by Deval Sahay,to play for the Central CoalFields Limited (CCL) team. Until 1998, Dhoni, studying in 12th grade, had never played cricket. At CCL, he was selected to bat higher up the order, where he batted extraordinarily. Deval Sahay including the commentators were impressed by his performance, he got a chance in junior Bihar team and eventually played for Ranji.

Even if Bihar tried hard to overpower Punjab Team but could not succeed.Dhoni’s achievement in the tournament included 488 runs (9 matches, 12 innings), 5 fifties, 17 catches.In the next face off,Dhoni got a chance in the East Zone U-19 squad playing for CK Nayudu trophy in the 1999–2000 season but scored low in four matches, which led to the loss of East Zone Team.

Dhoni played in Ranji Trophy for Bihar in 1999–2000, at 18 years. He made a half century in that match scoring 68* against the Assam cricket team.
At the end of the season he scored 283 runs in 5 matches.

Dhoni in the 2002–03 season scored around three half-centuries in the Ranji Trophy and a couple of half-centuries in the Deodhar Trophy.
In the 2003/04 season, Dhoni gained a century (128*) against the Assam team in the very first match of the Ranji tournament.he was responsible for his East Zone Team to win the Deodhar Trophy. Slowly, he started getting recognition for his unique batting style.

In the Duleep Trophy, Dhoni was selected over international cricketer Deep Dasgupta to represent East Zone.He batted scoring half-century in the second innings but the match was lost.

He got opportunities to play in the first two games of the Sri Lankan bilateral ODI series( 2005) and was put in No. 3 in the third ODI at Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

Dhoni finished the series with the highest run score(346) and won the Man of the Series award for his tremendous performance.

For the 2007 Cricket World Cup the Indian team achieved 3–1 victories over West Indies and Sri Lanka and Dhoni scored averages there.

Nevertheless,India still was disqualified out of the World Cup after losing against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Dhoni did a disappointing performance in both these matches.

In his one-day performance against Sri Lanka, Dhoni was picked over Dinesh Karthik in December 2005 as the Indian teams’ Test wicket-keeper.
