In a country like India, Cricket is not just a sport. It’s an emotion. An emotion that starts from a 28-inch square television and ends in either tears of joy or disappointment. You can say that we, more than anything, worship cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar’s Early life and education

Tendulkar was born at Nirmal Nursing Home in Dadar, Bombay to a Rajapur Saraswat Brahmin Maharashtrian family. His father, Ramesh Tendulkar, was a renowned Marathi poet and novelist. While his mother, Rajni, worked in the insurance industry.

As a child, Sachin was considered a bully and randomly picked up fights. To curb his fighting tendency, Sachin’s elder brother Ajit Tendulkar introduced him to cricket in the year 1984.

Sachin became acquainted with Ramakant Achrekar, a famous cricket coach and a club cricketer of repute, at Shivaji Park, Dadar. He performed poorly in the first meet-up. But with time, he picked up his pace and played excellently.

He was then accepted to Achrekar’s academy. Impressed by young Tendulkar’s talent, Achrekar advised him to switch schools. He took admission in Sharadashram Vidyamandir (English) High School, a school at Dadar which had a well-established cricket team and had produced many notable cricketers. Before this, Tendulkar had attended the Indian Education Society’s New English School in Bandra (East).

After joining the new school, he was referred to as a prodigy.

Sachin Tendulkar’ Career

Believe it or not, Sachin had started his professional career at the tender age of 14. On 14 November 1987, the 14-year-old Tendulkar was selected to represent Bombay in the Ranji Trophy, India’s premier domestic first-class cricket tournament, for the 1987–88 season. Unfortunately, he wasn’t selected to play for the final 11.

A year later, on 11 December 1988, aged 15 years and 232 days, Tendulkar made his debut for Bombay against Gujarat at Wankhede stadium and scored 100 not out in that match. At that time he was the youngest Indian to score a century on debut in first-class cricket.

Captain Dilip Vengasarkar was astonished to see a child play against India’s best fast bowler at the time, Kapil Dev with ease. This was only the beginning. He went on to play several matches at the national as well as international level.

In the 2011 World Cup Victory, he became the highest run-scorer with 482 runs at an average of 53.55 in the tournament. The nation was ecstatic by his incredible victory and shared tears of joy as he broke down in the stadium.

Tendulkar became the first batsman in history to cross the 34,000 run aggregate in all formats of Cricket on 5 December 2012. . The now-veteran-cricketer has played almost 657 matches.

He was also the captain of the Indian cricket team in 1997. But the team played poorly under his captainship and was soon replaced by Sourav Ganguly.

Sachin Tendulkar retired on November 16, 2013, after helping India register an innings victory over West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium.

Lessons to learn from Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin’s rise to heights is a testament to the fact that attributes like hard work, determination, and perseverance will take you anywhere in life. Cherishing the golden career of legend Sachin Tendulkar, here are 3 life lessons that you can take away from master blaster himself:

Better with time

Safe to say, Sachin has always improved with time. Even at the age of 40, he could easily outrun his opponent like he was 20 years old on the field. Despite several hurdles and setbacks, he always bounced back and emerged victoriously. I think that’s an admirable attitude to possess.

Don’t lose sight of your goal

Sachin always had the dream of lifting that world cup. After the loss in 2007, he was heartbroken and contemplated quitting. Fortunately, his dreams came true in 2011, when India finally won the world cup. Had he quit cricket in 2007, he wouldn’t have played in the world cup and won it. This tells us to never give up on our dreams. Just wait for the perfect timing.

Always have plan B

In one test match, he lost to Shane Warne’s tricky delivery. That day he went home and locked himself in the bathroom. He didn’t come out until he had thought of a proper strategy to face him. He devised multiple ways to outsmart Warne and it worked.

He thought about every possible way he could outdo the player. This is also indicative of the business world. No similar tactic would work for a prolonged time. Times and trends are constantly changing and you need to come up with elaborate plans to stay relevant.

Conclusion

“Beneath the helmet, under that unruly curly hair, inside the cranium, there is something we don’t know, something beyond scientific measure. Something that allows him to soar, to roam a territory of sport that, forget us, even those who are gifted enough to play alongside him cannot even fathom”
