This time looks great and promising for female-centric entertainers, as the Bollywood industry focuses heavily on movies about women. A bunch of promising female-led films are coming from the Zee Studios compound and will be ready for a release this year or early next year.

Popular Bollywood Analyst cum Business Transformation Expert Hirav Shah says, “Bollywood movies mostly revolve around love stories. Even then, they tend to revolve around the hero more than the female lead, who exists mostly as eye candy for the audience. Whenever the film gives more importance to the heroine, they easily get categorized as mere chick flicks. It is a term generally used condescendingly, to write off such films as guilty pleasures, to be enjoyed by a limited section of society, and most importantly something that shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

Hirav Shah adds, “But Bollywood has made many memorable women-centric films starting from Mother India. Recently also, a film like Margarita With A Straw which explored the sexuality of a disabled woman to giving us a coming of age saga in Queen; from highlighting significant issues like rape and molestation in films like Pink and Damini to portraying regular women dealing with the vagaries of life in Luck By Chance and Dear Zindagi; from quietly powerful indie films like Arth to action-oriented mainstream ones like Mardaani, Bollywood has stepped up its game time and again. But, despite that, we still have a long way to go till we have true equality in terms of representation on-screen.

Now, as the audience has started visiting theaters post-pandemic, Hirav Shah takes a look at some exciting women-centric movies from the Zee Studios banner.

Hirav Shah concludes by saying, “The commercial masala movies may financially make a good run at the box office, but in the last few years, there has been a growth in female-led movies too. In one of the survey reports by Interactive TV in 2017, it was found that 53% of the people visiting movie theaters are women. With the female audience in such a large number, it is important to cater to their demand and show more relatable movies.”
