Gehraiyaan : Story
Gehraiyaan is a story of two couples. Alisha(Deepika Padukone), a Mumbai-based yoga instructor, decides to develop a yoga-based app but faces financial problems as she shares a strained bonding with her father Vinod(Naseeruddin Shah). As a sub-plot, Alisha’s live-in relationship with Karan(Dhairya Karwa) will be showcased. The relationship turns into a mess as Karan quits his job as an advertising professional to write a novel. One fine day, Alisha’s cousin Tia(Ananya Pandey) invites the former and Karan to Tia’s farmhouse in Alibaug. This is the time Tia introduces her boyfriend, Zain(Siddhant Chaturvedi), to Alisha. Within no time, Alisha and Zain get attracted to each other without the knowledge of their respective partners. What kind of twists and turns will Alisha and Zain’s relationship go through? ; forms the crucial crux of the film.
Gehraiyaan Analysis:
Hirav Shah says, “This Shakun Batra directorial looks a bit shaky in the beginning but later comes on the track. The way Zain and Alisha’s bond grows is neatly and organically executed. The problems they face don’t seem sudden and are totally believable. The film takes a turn when Alisha gets pregnant, and Zain faces problems in his family business. Several scenes in the second half stand out, particularly Tia asking Zain whether he’s cheating on her, Zain and Jitesh’s confrontation, and Zain and Tia’s fight in the parking lot. Everything looks nice with a realistic setup.”
Hirav Shah adds, “Shakun Batra, who is known for making films on par with the world cinema, has this time come up with relationship-based content that explores the complexities. Though the director’s detailing each and every aspect of the relationships is good, the film is slow-paced, which comes as a major demerit for the movie. Instead, if the director had presented the film with a racy screenplay, the result would have been even better.“
Gehraiyaan Performances:
Hirav Shah, who is in awe of Deepu’s performance, says that Padukone has given the finest performance in the role that has a major screen time. This is not an easy act, and the role required someone of the caliber of Deepika to bring depth to the proceedings. Especially her acting in the last hour of the film, where she communicates beautifully just through her eyes and with limited dialogues. Siddhant Chaturvedi gets to play a great part, and he did outstanding work. The scenes between Deepika and Siddhant are impactful. Ananya Panday tries to give her best, and her acting in a confrontation scene with Siddhant during the pre-climax of the movie proves her acting capabilities.
Other artists such as Naseeruddin Shah, Rajat Kapoor, Dhairya Karwa gave a good performance in the key supporting roles.
Gehraiyaan – Technical Support:
Hirav Shah praises the technical aspects of the film. He says that the soundtrack composed by Oaff and Savera has an authentic standard and works well with the film. While the title track Gehraiyaan and Doobey have soul, Beqaaboo fails to create any impact. The cinematography by Kaushal Shah is outstanding. To specify, the scenes shot in enclosed spaces are showcased in an effective manner. Editing by Nitesh Bhatia is smooth but would have been even better as the film looks dragged at times.

In a nutshell, Hirav Shah says Gehraiyaan is a social drama that runs on relationships, but the mass audience will not be able to identify with the urban theme, the deep message, and the dark plot. Some great performances, a shocking climax, and a solid soundtrack make Gehraiyaan a decent watch.
