Born to a middle-class Kannada Brahmin family, Murthy led an average formative life. Murthy’s father N. Rama Rao was a school teacher who had to take care of 9 children (8 sons and a daughter).
After completing his schooling, Murthy went to the National Institute of Engineering and graduated in 1967 with a degree in electrical engineering.
In the year 1969, he received his master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.

Murthy joined IIM Ahmedabad in 1976 as the chief of the system. In the beginning, he tried to enter the IT industry by opening a small IT software consulting firm named Softronics in Pune. The firm went to become a disaster and then he joined Patni Computer Systems.
