Born to a middle-class Kannada Brahmin family, Murthy led an average formative life. Murthy’s father N. Rama Rao was a school teacher who had to take care of 9 children (8 sons and a daughter).

After completing his schooling, Murthy went to the National Institute of Engineering and graduated in 1967 with a degree in electrical engineering.
