Until 2000, the global climate crisis was a fear. But now it’s a reality that needs to be accepted, asserts Shah.
Shah Adds-The increase in the annual global temperature is quite dangerous as it will question the existence of humanity on this planet. NASA confirmed that the past decade(2010-2019) was the hottest decade. The combined land and ocean temperature, according to NOAA 2019 Global Climate Summary, has increased at an average rate of 0.07°C. That number seems to be less, but its effects are hazardous. The tiniest little shift in the average temperature is reflected on the large scale.
Meanwhile, climate change has also been the major reason that is posing existential threat to some of the world’s most beautiful cities and villages, that are worth a visit once in a lifetime.

1. Jakarta, Indonesia
Last year in September, Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo announced that the country’s capital would be relocated from Jakarta to the province of East Kalimantan on the lesser populated island of Borneo. The relocation was meant to reduce the burden on Jakarta, which has been facing problems such as poor quality air and traffic gridlocks, and is particularly prone to flooding. The combination of climate change and heavy congestion continues to bury Jakarta, the “world’s fastest-sinking city”, by about 25 cm into the ground every year.

As per a recent research, it has been reported that a sea level rise of just 3 feet to 9 feet will have a monstrous effect in Lagos, Nigeria.
Sounds scary, since it is
Africa’s most populated city and that it is facing an imminent danger of flooding.
One more study said Lagos will continue to hover near the danger line, since global sea levels are expected to shoot up to more than 6 feet by this century.

3. Houston, Texas
Experts are of the opinion that half of such cities like Houston might just sink by the end of the century. But, apart from the “Global Climate Change Issue”, here the main culprit is excessive groundwater pumping. Houston relies heavily on aquifers (bodies of porous rock that act as a natural filtration system) to produce water for homes, industries, and farms. Over-pumping can deplete these aquifers, causing the land to compress and sink.

Venice’s waterways are what makes it such a unique and romantic place, but does a watery fate lie in store for this enchanting city?
Well, Venice is sinking every year at a rate of 0.08 inch. Yes, this is the truth that is certainly petrifying. Meanwhile, a flood barrier construction had started in 2003, comprising 78 gates across its three inlets, but it is reported that the flood barrier will not be ready until, even next 2 years.

It’s a struggle between man and sea. Back in 1971, a tidal surge triggered by a tropical cyclone invaded 16 villages on the coast of Kendrapara district in Odisha, sweeping away more than 700 people and causing immense destruction. Ever since, the advancing Bay of Bengal has been eating into human habitations, razing houses and destroying villages.
The worst affected are the people of the Satabhaya gram panchayat, enduring nature’s fury for decades, much before the word “climate change” entered the public discourse.
Satabhaya today wears a deserted look. A few dozen families are busy gathering valuable household articles before the village is wiped out from the map.
