Sanju Viswanath Samson ( born 11 November 1994, presently in his 27th year ) is an Indian international cricketer who plays for Kerala in domestic cricket. He is the captain of Rajasthan Royals in Indian Premier League. He was the Vice-captain of the India U-19 team for the 2014 Under 19 World Cup.

Sanju became the first wicket-keeper batsman to score a double hundred in Vijay Hazare Trophy in the sixth instance when an Indian scored a double-century in List A cricket scoring an unbeaten 212 for Kerala against Goa in 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy which is the second fastest double hundred and also the highest and fastest by a wicket-keeper in List A cricket.He was the Vice-captain of the India U-19 team for the 2013 Top End Under-19 Series in Australia and 2013 ACC Under-19 Asia cup.

He is the second youngest player to score a half-century in the IPL achieved on 29 April 2013 in a match between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the age of 18. The record was later surpassed by 17 year old Riyan Parag in the 2019 Indian Premier League against Delhi Capitals. Sanju was adjudged as the “Best Young Player of the Season” (Later known Emerging player of the year) in the 2013 IPL through an official poll. Despite being a teenager, Sanju Samson has emerged as a prime contender to be the flag-bearer of cricket for the state of Kerala, one of the few regions in India where football’s popularity and following outdoes that of cricket.He was selected to play in the Ranji Trophy for Kerala when he was 15 years of age. He made his debut for the Kerala Ranji Trophy team on 3 November 2011. He scored two hundreds and a fifty in five appearances the next season.

He was Kerala’s highest run-getter in 2013-14 Ranji Trophy season scoring 530 runs at an average of 58.88. In his first match at Guwahati against Assam he scored a career-best 211 to bring up his first double century in Ranji Trophy. In the second match against Andhra Pradesh at Thalassery where he scored 115 from 281 balls with 12 fours and 2 sixes to help Kerala post a mammoth total of 486 in the 1st innings. In the second innings, he scored another 51 not out off 73 balls which includes 10 fours and a six.

He was appointed as the captain for the Kerala Ranji Trophy team for the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy season, thus becoming the youngest captain to lead a Ranji Trophy side in an entire tournament. He was the leading run-scorer for Kerala in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, with 627 runs in seven matches.

In August 2018, he was one of eight players that were fined by the Kerala Cricket Association, after showing dissent against Kerala’s captain, Sachin Baby.In November 2018, he was named as one of eight players to watch ahead of the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy.

Sanju was appointed as the captain of the Board President’s XI side in place of injured Naman Ojha for the two-day tour match against Sri Lanka which was held on 11 November in Kolkata. in which he scored a century against the visiting team ending their two-day tour match in a draw.

Sanju was named on the Kerala squad to play the inaugural season of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at the age of 14. He made his twenty-20 debut for Kerala on 16 October 2011 against Hyderabad in the 2011-12 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He scored his maiden half-century in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 10 April 2014 against Rajasthan.He was the highest run-getter of Kerala in the 2014-15 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

He was the 10th highest run-getter on 2015-16 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 267 runs including three half centuries and second highest for Kerala after Rohan Prem.He topped the Kerala batsmen on 2017-18 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy too. He was the captain of Kerala in 2020-21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

In August 2014, Sanju was selected to the 17-man squad to play against England in 5 ODIs and a Twenty20. However, he did not make it to the final eleven on any of the matches and remained a backup keeper to MS Dhoni. Sanju was frequently called to the national team but never made it to the playing XI, until he made his International debut against Zimbabwe at Harare, on July 19, 2015.

In October 2019, he was named in India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against Bangladesh but was benched in the whole series.In November 2019, he was again called to the T20I series against West Indies vs India, after an injury to Shikhar Dhawan. He played the 3rd T20I against Sri Lanka.

He was selected for the T20I series of the India tour of New Zealand and was part of the playing eleven as an opener. Though he couldn’t create the desired impact with the bat, his acrobatic catch in the deep made people take note of his fielding process. In October 2020, he was named in India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against Australia. On 9 November 2020, he was added to India’s One Day International (ODI) squad, also for their series against Australia.He failed to break into the playing eleven of India in the oneday series though he played all the three twenty 20 matches. He didn’t have a great series, scoring a total of 48 runs from 3 innings. His fielding efforts were once again appreciated by the critics.
