Life Lessons from Desmond Haynes:

1. The Unstoppable

He was the record man. The man who owned numerous records. The game changer. The indomitable. The invincible.

When Haynes wrapped up his career, he was the highest run-scorer in ODIs and also owned the record for most number of centuries (17) in the format.

He loved to create new records. He loved to be a champ, a master and a conqueror. He loved to be a winner. He was just “unstoppable” during his era.

2. Partnership

Sharing the same values. Choosing a partner with complementary skills. Having a track record together. These are the biggest takeaways from the legend.

Indeed…

Along with his batting partner Gordon Greenidge, Haynes set a number of batting records for the world to see and admire and worship.

Desmond Haynes’s Legacy:

In the History of ODI cricket, one of only two players to have scored a century on both debut and last match played is Desmond Haynes.

His 148 with Australia came on his debut in ODIs, which still remains the highest score ever made by a batsman on ODI debut as well as the quickest century scored by an ODI debutant.

The only batsman to have carried bat thrice is Desmond Haynes too. Not only is Haynes the only one to carry his bat thrice in Tests, he also holds a unique world record: at Dunedin in 1978-79 Haynes opened batting and was last out in each innings, scoring 55 and 105.

He was rated “one of the greatest of all time” by Trinidad and Tobago Guardian. BBC had described his as “one of the greatest opening partnerships in history with fellow Barbadian Gordon Greenidge.”

In 1991, the cricket almanac Wisden noted his “combination of timing and barely evident power”, and named him one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year.

He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame as one of the special inductees to mark the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship final in June 2021.

Desmond Haynes will always be remembered as an amazing strokeplayer, often the best batsman of the world during his time, a smiling assassin and a smart cricketer of inexhaustible stamina and grit-Concludes Noted Sports Astrologer Hirav Shah.
