In 1999 Madhuri Dixit Nene left the Hindi film industry to concentrate on her marriage life and eventually motherhood. After more than two decades, the beauty queen Madhuri Dixit is all set for her second innings with Netflix’s series The Fame Game. As per the serial producer Karan Johar, Madhuri was the first choice to play the superstar Anamika Anand in The Fame Game.

In 2007 Madhuri’s comeback vehicle was planned by none other than Aditya Chopra for the film Aaja Nachle. In the movie, Madhuri played the author-backed tailor-made role of an NRI dancer returning home to find her roots, but tragically, Aaja Nachle bombed.

After the film’s release, Madhuri said in an interview, “There’s no fear of failure in me. I’m just happy that something different has been attempted in my comeback film. There’s no hero in the film. But I won’t call myself the film’s hero. I’m the female protagonist. I remember when I met Aditya Chopra for the first time, my first question to him was – do people still want to see me? He looked at me very strangely and said, ‘Don’t worry about that.’ But I was really concerned.” Incidentally, Vaibhavi Merchant is the dance choreographer for Madhuri Dixit in both Aaja Nachle and The Fame Game.

Veteran Bollywood Analyst cum Business Transformation Expert Hirav Shah says, “After Aaja Nachle, Madhuri Dixit was seen in cameo roles in films like Gulaab Gang, Total Dhamaal, and Karan Johar’s lavish disaster Kalank, KJo’s own Razia Sultan, Kalank but none of them gave a good break to the dancing queen. After the failure of the Yash Raj film about an NRI returning to her roots and Indian classical dancing in Aaja Nachle was specially designed for her, Madhuri even acted in films like Total Dhamaal, where she had no scope to perform at all.”

Shah states that after Aaja Nachle flopped, Madhuri hastily returned to her home in the US, but the itch to face the camera never leaves the movie star, unless she is Rajshri, Vyjanthimala, or Suchitra Sen, the only three actresses who never returned to the silver screen after announcing retirement. While Jaya Bachchan and Sridevi made a successful comeback in Silsila and English Vinglish, respectively, Dimple Kapadia returned to the camera years after her marriage and motherhood in Sagar.

The Fame Game premiered exclusively on Netflix on February 25th, and the reactions have been super positive.

The Fame Game Review:

Hirav Shah says, “Madhuri may have been away from the screen, but she hasn’t lost the magnetism with which she pulls the audience into her world. Madhuri, who probably has been yearning for a power-packed role like this, reigns in this suspense drama.”

Shah adds, “The Fame Game is a suspense ride that makes you sit upright till the last shot, and that’s how you know the show had you obsessed. The mystery, thrill, and darkness doesn’t let you press pause until you have watched till the end.”

Hirav Shah also points out that a few scenes looked stretched a bit, and a few characters could have been done without. In some sequences, the show feels dated, but the good points take over the negatives here. There were moments when the show seemed a bit too unrealistic, but it was Madhuri’s phenomenal acting that more than made up for such loopholes.”

Hirav Shah concludes by saying, “The Fame Game is Madhuri’s true comeback vehicle, and there is no denying the fact that the star actress would be bombarded with calls and offers after this show.”
