After appearing in another series of box office flops, he starred as the titular character in the biographical sports drama Azhar and an evil spirit in the horror thriller Raaz Reboot (both 2016) – and received praise for the drama Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2015), and the action film Baadshaho (2017).

In addition to acting in films, Hashmi has launched an autobiographical book that dealt with his son’s illness and is a prominent celebrity endorser for brands and products. He has been married to his childhood sweetheart Parveen Shahani since 2006, with whom he has a son.
