1. Early Life and Career

Akkineni Nagarjuna was born on August 29, 1959, in Chennai, India. He is the son of legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao and his wife Annapurna Akkineni. Nagarjuna made his acting debut in 1986 with the Telugu film Vikram, which was directed by V. Madhusudhana Rao.

2. Rise to Fame

Nagarjuna’s breakthrough came with the 1989 film Geethanjali, which was directed by Mani Ratnam. The film was a critical and commercial success and earned Nagarjuna his first National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. He went on to star in several successful films, including Shiva, Annamayya, and Manam.

Mechanic Alludu

The film was supposed to be about Nag, but it went into the hands of Chiranjeevi. The 1993 comedy-drama was directed by B Gopal. Akkineni Nageshwara Rao was also in the film, but true to Nag’s judgment, the film bombed at the box office.

Aahaa

Aahaa is a 1998 film that was produced by Nagarjuna, but he preferred not to act in it. This Suresh Krishna directorial was made with Jagapathi Babu as the lead actor.

RGV’s Ramayana

Senior filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma wanted to do a film named Ramayana with Nagarjuna as the hero. But knowing the reputation of RGV in recent years, the veteran actor refused to act in the project.

Mounaragam

Nagarjuna skipped a classic film early in his career. The film was written and directed by Mani Ratnam. However, Nagarjuna and Mani Ratnam collaborated for Geethanjali in 1989, which went on to become a cult hit in Telugu cinema.

Kalisundam Raa

Kalisundam Raa was a 2000 blockbuster movie that slipped out of Nagarjuna’s hands as he did not find the story exciting. Left with no option, director Udayasankar did the film with Venkatesh.

Badri

Puri Jagannadh made his directorial debut with Badri that stars Pawan Kalyan as the hero. But before approaching Pawan Kalyan, Puri had narrated the story to Nagarjuna. As Nag rejected the project, Puri Jagannadh went with Pawan Kalyan. However, both Puri and Nag later collaborated for movies Super and Shivamani.

Ponniyin Selvan

Senior filmmaker Mani Ratnam who thought of roping Nagarjuna as the hero in most of his films after Geethanjali has somehow failed to convince the hero with his scripts. Mahesh Babu and Nagarjuna were to be seen sharing the screen in the film. The ace filmmaker even planned a multi-starrer with Nagarjuna and Mahesh Babu, but due to unavoidable reasons, the movie never materialized, and now Mani Ratnam is doing the same story as Ponniyin Selvan franchise with Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, among others.

Thalapathi:

Mani Ratnam first narrated the script of the classic blockbuster to Nagarjuna. However, things didn’t work, and later, the ace director roped in Rajnikanth and Mammootty in lead roles. The rest is history!
