Introduction

The Olympics remain the most compelling search for excellence that exists in sport, and maybe in life itself, Opines India’s Favourite Sports Strategist & Advisor & Astrologer, Hirav Shah.

They are considered the world’s foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. The Olympic Games are normally held every four years, alternating between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years in the four-year period.

Past of Olympics

Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894, leading to the first modern Games in Athens in 1896. The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement with the Olympic Charter defining its structure and authority.

Olympics In 2021

Billions of viewers. The moral support of nations. Weeks of gushing coverage from media outlets around the world. Olympic glory is a heady dream-come-true for almost every athlete who makes it…

The 2021 Summer Olympics, which is the greatest international multi-sport event, is scheduled to be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the event was postponed in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and will be held largely behind closed doors with no spectators permitted under the state of emergency.

Despite being rescheduled for 2021, the event retains the Tokyo 2020 name for marketing and branding purposes. This is the first time that the Olympic Games have been postponed and rescheduled, rather than cancelled. The Summer Paralympics will be held between 24 August and 5 September 2021 after the Olympics.

Tokyo was selected as the host city during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 7 September 2013. The 2020 Games will mark the second time that Japan has hosted the Summer Olympic Games, the first being also in Tokyo in 1964, making this the first city in Asia to host the Summer Games twice. Overall, these will be the fourth Olympic Games to be held in Japan, which also hosted the Winter Olympics in 1972 (Sapporo) and 1998 (Nagano).

Tokyo was also scheduled to host the 1940 Summer Olympics but pulled out in 1938. The 2021 Games will be the second of three consecutive Olympics to be held in East Asia, the previous being in Pyeongchang, South Korea in 2018, and the next in Beijing, China in 2022.

The 2021 Games will see the introduction of new competitions including 3×3 basketball, freestyle BMX, and madison cycling, as well as further mixed events. Under new IOC policies, which allow the host organizing committee to add new sports to the Olympic program to augment the permanent core events, these Games will see karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding make their Olympic debuts, as well as the return of baseball and softball for the first time since 2008.

Opening Ceremony

The 2021 Summer Olympics opening ceremony will be the grandest, the most magnificent and awe-inspiring event of the year.

The spectacular affair is scheduled to take place on 23 July 2021 at Olympic Stadium, Tokyo. It is expected to be formally opened by Emperor Naruhito. As mandated by the Olympic Charter, the proceedings will combine the formal and ceremonial opening of this international sporting event, including welcoming speeches, hoisting of the flags and the parade of athletes, with an artistic spectacle to showcase the host nation’s culture and history.

The vast majority of the artistic spectacle will be pre-recorded, with live segments performed with a small VIP audience. The theme of the Olympic Ceremonies is Moving Forward, referencing the global COVID-19 pandemic, with the opening ceremony theme being the Tokyo 2020 slogan United by Emotion, which the organisers intend to “reaffirm the role of sport and the value of the Olympic Games.

With a record total of 119 athletes in their official contingent this time around, India have improved on their total of 117 athletes in the 2016 Rio Olympics by two. Out of the 119 Indian athletes, 67 are male and 52 are female participants.

The contingent, whose average age is 26.99 years, has a wide-range — skeet shooter Mairaj Ahmed Khan, 45, is the oldest among the lot whereas 10m air rifle shooter Divyansh Singh Panwar, 18, is the youngest. The contingent has six 19-year-olds.
