National Farmers Day 2020: Farmers are the backbone of society. They are the ones who work around the clock and the year to ensure that people don’t starve and die of hunger but they themselves struggle for 2 square meals a day. Therefore to promote awareness to help and reward farmers for their contribution to society Farmers day is celebrated every year.

National Farmers Day is celebrated every year especially in those states which are actively engaged in farming such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh among others.

National Farmers Day 2020: Date

Kisan Diwas or National Farmers Day is observed on December 23 across the country to praise the farmers as they are the spine of India. The day was chosen to honor the birth anniversary of the fifth Prime Minister of India, Choudhary Charan Singh. He was born on December 23, 1902.

Choudhary Charan Singh once said, “The true India resides in its villages.”

National Farmers Day 2020: History

Chaudhary Charan Singh, the Kisan Leader, served the country for a very short period from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980. He had introduced several welfare schemes for the farmers and wrote several books on farmers and their problems depicting various solutions to improve the lives of the farmers of the nation. Therefore the government, in 2001, decided to mark Charan Singh’s birth anniversary as Kisan Diwas.

Chaudhary Charan Singh followed the famous slogan – “JAI JAWAN JAI KISAN” which was given to the farmers by Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India.

National Farmers Day 2020: Significance

India is primarily the land of villages in which the majority of the population is farmers having agriculture as their main source of income. However, despite being the most prominent means of life for so many people, not many are aware of the problems that farmers face.

People remain ignorant about the necessary information about this sect of the country. Therefore celebrations work on educating people about these issues, and also focused on empowering the farmers themselves with the latest learnings of the agricultural sector.

On Farmer’s day several debates, forums, discussions, quizzes, and competitions are organized to discuss the various issues related to farmers and cultivation.

Here are some popular quotes on Kisan Divas that you can send to your friends, colleague, and family to promote awareness among the citizens of the country to understand the importance of the contributions of the farmers to society.

NATIONAL FARMERS’ DAY 2020: POPULAR QUOTES

“If agriculture goes wrong, nothing else will have a chance to go right in the country.” -M. S. Swaminathan

“The discovery of agriculture was the first big step toward a civilized life.” -Arthur Keith

“A farmer is a magician who produces money from the mud.” -Amit Kalantri

“To a farmer, dirt is not a waste, it is wealth.” -Amit Kalantri
“If the farmer is rich, then so is the nation.” -Amit Kalantri

Coming to the current scenario, the ongoing stand-off between the Union government and protesting farmers does not show any signs of a resolution at the moment. Farmers, especially in Punjab and Haryana, have been protesting against the three agriculture laws enacted by the central government. The argument is that these reforms will abolish middlemen and enhance farmers’ incomes, but farmers maintain that this is a precursor to the large-scale withdrawal of government support from farming, and will only replace existing middlemen with more powerful corporate entities.

Let’s hope the farmers and government come to a common solution that will benefit the farmers.
